Wildcats Drop Season Opener to Rival Huskies

The Edmonton Wildcats took one on the chin last night as they went down to defeat against their cross town rival Edmonton Huskies dropping their season opener 23-17 and in the process snapping a seven year losing streak to the Cats in front of a full house at Clarke Park.

The Huskies took an early 7-point lead compliments of a 3 yd pass from QB Erdman to Stanton. After a 2 and out for the Wildcats, the Huskies took possession again and moved the ball in position to kick a 45 yd field goal to put the Huskies up 10 -0 after the first Quarter. Second quarter saw both offenses struggle and the defenses take over. The Huskies managed to kick a 20yd field goal mid way through the 2nd and the Wildcats finally got on the board in the dying seconds with a 48 yd field goal from Ideen Samadi to close out the half with the Huskies leading 16-3.

The defensive war continued into the third quarter between both teams which saw both squads rack up penalty yard with Wildcats taking 19 for 161 yds and the Huskies 11 for 110 yds. The Wildcats managed a 44 yd field goal in the third to close the gap to 16-6 and then opened up the 4th quarter with another 45 yd field goal to make it 16-9 Huskies. A pair of fumbles by the Huskies netted only a single point for the Wildcats mid way through the quarter and then the Huskies broke it open with a 26yd pass from Erdman to Schwab to put the Huskies up 23-10 late in the quarter. The Wildcats weren’t giving up though as Levon Hawreliak put together a couple of nice running plays and punched it in from 8yds out to inch closer to the Huskies 23-17. The Wildcats attempted an onside kick but were unsuccessful and the Huskies took possession to end the game with the final score 23-17 Huskies.
