Edmonton Wildcats Season Opener
The Edmonton Wildcats opened their season with a decisive win over the Calgary Colts at Clarke Park on Saturday night by a score of 35-21 in front of 900 enthusiastic fans.
The first quarter saw no scoring and a 50yd punt return for a touchdown by David Berg called back due to a penalty. In the second quarter David Berg ran a 100yd punt return back for a touchdown only to be called back again for a penalty on the play. The Colts opened the scoring with a touchdown in the second quarter but was answered back quickly by the Cats with a 1yd touchdown pass to Mike Wojcicki who had 5 rec. for 40 yards on the day. The Colts then countered that with a 95 yard kick-off return by Alan Lichwa to make the score 14 -7 with little time left in the half. Not to be out done the Cats finished the scoring in the first half with a 64 yd punt return for a touchdown by David Berg, this time with no penalty on the play to make it 14-14 going into the locker room. The Wildcats came out in the 2nd half with renewed energy as Kevin (Cash) Wuthrich hauled in a 20yd touchdown pass from Andy Pilon to go ahead for the first time in the game 21-14. Cash had 4 rec. for 50 yards on the day while Andy Pilon completed 14 of 28 for 184 yds. With momentum swinging the Cats way Andy took advantage of a banged up defense by scampering for 40 yds on a keeper play to set up another scoring opportunity. On the next play Andy tossed a 10 yd touchdown pass to rookie Jerit Lambert to make the score at the end of the third quarter 28-14. Calgary was only able to muster up one more score in the game before Andy ended it with a 10yd keeper player for a touchdown to make the final score Wildcats 35 and the Colts 21. All in all a solid effort by both clubs and a great start to the season for the Wildcats.
On Defense, 4th year defensive back Neil King lead the team with 20 points on 9 tackles with Line backer Steven Rae not far behind with 14 points on 4 tackles and 2 QB sacks.
The Wildcats offense had 370 total net yards, with the defense holding the Colts to just 7 points in the second half.
Next game sees the Wildcats on the road, taking on the Winnipeg Rifles, Saturday August15th 12:00pm at Canad Inn Stadium.
All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field at around 7:30 pm nightly.
