Wildcats Go 2-0
The Edmonton Wildcats met with the Regina Thunder in Mosaic Stadium for a rainy Sunday afternoon game. Both teams came into the game 1-0, with Regina being the reigning Canadian Champions.
The game started on a high for the Wildcats when Olson threw a 46-yard Touchdown catch to Receiver Brad Quartel, giving the Wildcats a 7-0 lead only 3:57 into the game. The next change on the scoreboard wasn’t seen until 9:32 into the second when the Thunder gave up a safety, increasing the Wildcat lead to 9-0.
The Thunder saw the first points of the second half when Colton Klassen had a 4 yard Touchdown run, bringing the Wildcat lead down to 9-7 with 9:04 left in the third quarter. The Thunder did it again 7 minutes later when Jaeden Marwick pushed a touchdown through from the 1 yard line, giving the Thunder a lead of 14-9. The Wildcats reciprocated with 0:35 left in the quarter when Olson handed off to first-year player Anthony Myroon who rushed 17 yards for a Touchdown, putting the Wildcats back in lead 16-14. The fourth quarter started off with a Wildcat Field Goal by Kicker Ideen Samadi increasing the Wildcat lead to 19-14 where it stayed until the end of the game.
The Wildcats offense saw 276 total yards, 136 rushing and 157 passing. Anthony Myroon lead the rushing with 23 carries for 103 yards and one Touchdown. Brad Quartel lead the pass receiving again with 4 catches for a total of 92 yards and 1 Touchdown. Quarterback Jordan Olson completed 9 out of 19 passes for 157 yards.
The game was a defensive battle, and the Wildcats were lead by Linebacker Brett Morrow who had 7 tackles, 3 assisted tackles, 1 quarterback sack, and 1 forced fumble giving him 20 points. The Wildcats forced 7 Thunder turnovers, with 5 interceptions and 2 recovered fumbles.
The Wildcats are the only team in the PFC who are 2-0 and heading into a Bye week. The next 5 games are in Edmonton, starting on September 7 against the Winnipeg Rifles.
