Wildcats Scratch Out a Win Against Winnipeg
The Edmonton Wildcats get back in the win column with a shootout victory on Sunday afternoon at Clarke Park against the Winnipeg Rifles. They didn’t make it easy on themselves though as they salted away a 24- 7 halftime lead to close out the contest 49- 36 and take home the victory in front of approximately 600 vocal fans.
The afternoon’s match-up saw a combined total of over 1000 yards by both clubs with the Wildcats coming out on top when all was said and done. The Wildcats offense looked sharp in the first half racking up 363 net yds, with 190 on the ground and 173 in the air while the defense held the Rifles to just 140 yds of net offense, with a dominating performance from Line Backer Matt Lalande who finished the day with 10 tackles and 22 points.
The Wildcats took their foot off the gas in the second half and as a result the Rifles clawed their way back into the game with a 24 yd TD pass to Matt Lariviere, one of three on the day for the receiver, to cut the lead to 24-14. The Wildcats answered right back thought, with a spectacular 105 yd kick off return by the rookie wide receiver Jerit Lambert to put the Wildcats up 31 -14. Not to be out done the Rifles answered that with a 33 yd strike to Burnett- Joseph Marsh to cut the lead to 31- 21 at the end of 3.
The 4th Quarter saw a 45yd TD toss to Kevin Wuthrich from Andy Pilon to put the Cats up 38 -21. But the Rifles were not done as they answered back with a 16yds toss to Marsh to make it 41 – 28. A 7 yd TD pass to rookie receiver Mitch Richter rounded out the Wildcats scoring and a 29 yds TD to Lariviere of the Rifles ended the contest with the Wildcats outlasting the Rifles 49 – 36.
Next weekend sees the Wildcats on a bye week with their next game at home hosting the cross town rival Edmonton Huskies Saturday September 19th 7:00pm at Clarke Park
All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field at around 7:30 pm nightly.
